Chennai floods: City grapples with power cut, flood waters in the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung

Residents in Chennai and its suburbs continued to grapple with stagnant water and power disruption on Wednesday, while schools and colleges remained closed for another day as the capital city of Tamil Nadu limps back to normalcy following heavy rainfall due to cyclone Michaung.

Two days after Cyclone Michaung hit the southern coast of India, state and Central agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), continued the relief operations on Thursday. Many parts of Chennai and neighbouring areas are still struggling with power disruption and flood waters for the third straight day.
The death toll in the rain-related incidents has reached at least 20 after three more bodies were found under the debris of a building in Chennai, Hindustan Times reported.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be in Chennai to review the situation and will conduct an aerial survey of the affected areas on Thursday, ANI reported.
“Leaving New Delhi for Chennai to assess the flood situation caused due to Michaung Cyclone in Tamil Nadu. Shall conduct an aerial survey of the affected areas and also review the situation with the State Government,” Rajnath Singh wrote on X.
Visuals from Chennai and neighbouring districts showed the widespread damage caused by cyclone Michaung. While several localities remain inundated, people are being rescued via inflatable boats and civic agencies escorting those stranded to relief camps.
In the Pallikaranai area of Chennai, a petrol pump remained inundated on Thursday morning. Visuals shared by news agency ANI showed the Sithathipuram step dam overflowing near Sholavandan in the Madurai district due to rainfall in the catchment areas of the Vaigai dam.
Meanwhile, flood relief teams of the Indian Navy continued to help stranded people in various parts of Chennai.
The Southern Railways has cancelled a total of 15 trains due to heavy rainfall and waterlogging in Chennai. Among the cancelled trains were the Chennai Egmore-Tirunelveli Vande Bharat Special and the Tirunelveli-Chennai Egmore Vande Bharat Special.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday distributed flood relief materials and food among affected people in Chennai.
According to ANI, the Indian Air Force has delivered a total of 2,300 kgs of relief material to people in the cyclone-affected areas.
Meanwhile, the National Company Law Tribunal Chennai cancelled the hearing of cases scheduled on December 7 as the two court premises of NCLT have been inundated by flood waters. In an official notification, NCLT Chennai said that the basement of the NCLT building is flooded, and the electrical equipment has been submerged in water for over three days. The dates for the hearing will be re-notified later.
Amid the havoc caused by Cyclone Michaung, the Tamil Nadu government has sought an interim relief of over ₹5,000 crore from the Central government. According to an official release by the state government, Stalin wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday seeking a grant of interim relief of ₹5,060 crore.
