Oscar Awards 2024 Nominations: Academy Awards are more inclusive than ever but there's still a long way to go
The 2024 Oscars nominations have been unveiled. The two contenders for the Best Film category from India — Vidhu Vinod Chopra's 12th Fail and Jude Anthany Joseph's 2018 —  didn't make the cut. And so didn't most other foreign films. Of the total 10 films nominated for the major category, Anatomy of a Fall and Past Lives are the only two primarily non-English films. However, this is the first time that more than one non-English film made the cut.

The Academy did a decent job in celebrating diversity in 2024, especially when compared to previous years.
Lily Gladstone, nominated for her performance in Martin Scorsese's Killer of the Flower Moon, became the first Native American to be nominated for the Best Actress category. Earlier, Gladstone became the first Indigenous woman to win Best Actress in a Motion Picture at the Golden Globes.
Colman Domingo scripted history by becoming the first Afro-Latino nominated for the Best Actor category for his performance in Rustin. Also, another Black person Jefferey Wright bagged a place for his performance in American Fiction.
Notably, Domingo is also one of the two openly queer actors Jodie Foster, who received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Nyad. Both actors were nominated for playing queer characters in their respective films, for the first time in the history of the Academy Awards.
Talking of inclusivity and diversity, for the first time in history, three of the 10 movies nominated for Best Picture — Justine Triet's Anatomy of a Fall, Greta Gerwig's Barbie and Celine Song's Past Lives — were directed by women. The other nominees in the category are — American Fiction, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer, Poor Things, and The Zone of Interest.
Song became the first Asian woman to be nominated for the Best Original Screenplay.
