The MTV Video Music Awards 2023 which took place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on Tuesday, September 12, was a star-studded affair with the biggest names from the music industry gathering for the grand event. The awards ceremony witnessed stars such as Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Megan Thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, Shakira, K-Pop sensations Tomorrow X Together (TXT) and Stray Kids, Doja Cat, Rema, model Emily Ratajkowski, Diddy, among others.
The most astonishing highlight of the evening was Taylor Swift’s record-breaking award achievements at the MTV VMAs 2023. The popular American singer bagged 9 awards in different categories, including the ‘Video of the Year’ and ‘Song of the Year’ honours.
Apart from this, Waka Waka fame Shakira created history by becoming the first South American artist to win the coveted Video Vanguard Award.
Nicki Minaj hosted the show for the second year in a row. The opening performance of the event was given by Lil Wayne. On the other hand, Saweetie hosted the 90-minute pre-show of the event. Everyone attending the event went for a surprise when the American boy band NSYNC appeared, who had not been onstage together since the band performed at the 2013 VMAs. Now, there has been a rumour about the band to be creating some new music for the third instalment of the Trolls film franchise, which is yet to be confirmed.
According to MTV, nine major categories were swept by the American Pop artist Taylor Swift while she was nominated in a total of 11 categories. American singer Solána Imani Rowe, popularly known as SZA, followed Swift with second highest nominations in eight categories.
