A movie is soon going to be made about the life of late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. Production company Matchbox Shots has secured the rights for the cinematic adaptation of Jupinderjit Singh’s book, ‘Who Killed Moosewala? The Spiralling Story of Violence in Punjab,’ according to a PTI report.

The book offers a chilling account of the life and tragic demise of the famed Punjabi singer. Published in June this year, Singh’s book provides a deep dive into the shadowy underbelly of the music industry, unveiling the sinister influence of drugs and the rising violence triggered by gangsters’ increasing dominance in Punjab. The narrative paints a vivid and comprehensive picture of crime, fame and tragedy in the life of Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, popularly known as Sidhu Moosewala, according to the report.
Author Jupinderjit Singh revealed that several production companies had expressed interest in his book, but Matchbox Shots stood out due to its impressive body of work. He was quoted by the news agency saying, “I am thrilled that they have taken the rights to the book to develop it further.”
Singh’s in-depth exploration of crime and celebrity in Punjab is set to be brought to life on screen under the leadership of Dikssha Jyote Routray, a prominent figure at Matchbox Shots.
Matchbox Shots has already delivered many successful films including filmmaker Sriram Raghavan’s hit movie Andhadhun and Hansal Mehta’s crime series Scoop. Telly Chakkar quoted Sarita Patil of Matchbox Shots emphasising the intriguing interplay between the music industry and gang wars in Punjab. She stated, “The story is an intricate interplay of crime, fame and music in Punjab, a narrative that demands contemplation and understanding.”
On May 29, 2022, 28-year-old Sidhu Moosewala, was shot dead in Punjab’s Mansa district. With hits like Same Beef, So High, The Last Ride, 295, and Just Listen, the singer-rapper found a cult following both in India and abroad.
The project, yet to be titled, promises to unravel the intricacies of the music industry and the harsh realities often concealed beneath the glamorous facade.
