One of the biggest and most prestigious events celebrating world cinema, the International Film Festival of India commences in Goa on Monday, November 20. The 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which will be held across four venues in Goa, will also see Hollywood star Michael Douglas being awarded the prestigious Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award.
As stated by Prithul Kumar, MD NFDC and Joint Secretary Films, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting at the curtain raiser press conference for the 54th IFFI in Panaji on Sunday, the Hollywood actor and producer will be present at the event to accept the coveted award along with his wife-actress Catherine Zeta-Jones.
The event is scheduled to showcase a total of 270 films across four venues in Goa. While the international section of the 54th IFFI will have 198 films, the 'Indian Panorama' section will showcase 25 feature films and 20 non-feature films from India.
The veteran Hollywood actor and producer is also scheduled to hold a masterclass session at the film festival.
The IFFI Lifetime Achievement Award was instituted by the International Film Festival of India in 1999 and it was renamed at IFFI Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021 to mark the birth centenary of the legendary filmmaker. The award honours a global film personality for their ‘outstanding contribution to the world cinema.’
In a career spanning around five decades, Michael Douglas rose to fame with the 1984 romantic adventure film Romancing the Stone. Later in 1987, he was featured in the thriller film Fatal Attraction. In his illustrious career, he has played some major roles in cinematic masterpieces like Wall Street (1987), Basic Instinct (1992), Falling Down (1993), The American President (1995), Traffic (2000) and Behind the Candelabra (2013).
In recent years, the Hollywood icon was also seen playing Hank Pym in Ant-Man films including Ant-Man (2015), Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019); and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023).
Apart from that, he has also produced a number of notable films like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), The China Syndrome (1979), and The Game (1999).
Michael Douglas has received two Academy Awards, five Golden Globe Awards, and an Emmy Award. Earlier this year, he was also awarded the honorary Palm d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
