Semiconductor units approval to spur massive job creation in advanced technology sector
India has greenlit the establishment of three new semiconductor units under "Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystems in India". Through the initiative, the government has estimated direct employment opportunities are projected to reach 20,000 in advanced technology.

The ripple effect is expected to generate an additional 60,000 indirect jobs, spanning downstream industries such as automotive, electronics manufacturing, telecom manufacturing, and industrial manufacturing.
The newly sanctioned semiconductor units span a diverse spectrum of functions and locations:
  1. Semiconductor Fab at Dholera, Gujarat: Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) in collaboration with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC), Taiwan, will establish a semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat, with an investment of 91,000 crore. This facility will focus on producing high-performance compute chips and power management chips crucial for sectors such as electric vehicles, telecommunications, defence, and consumer electronics.
  2. Semiconductor ATMP unit in Morigaon, Assam: Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) will lead this unit in Morigaon, Assam, with an investment of 27,000 crore. Specialising in advanced semiconductor packaging technologies, the unit will cater to industries including automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and telecommunications.
  3. Semiconductor ATMP unit in Sanand, Gujarat: CG Power, in partnership with Renesas Electronics Corporation, Japan, and Stars Microelectronics, Thailand, will establish this unit in Sanand, Gujarat, with an investment of 7,600 crore. Focused on manufacturing chips for diverse applications spanning consumer electronics, automotive, and industrial sectors, this unit is primed to significantly impact India's semiconductor landscape.
  4. The Programme for Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem in India, with a substantial outlay of 76,000 crore, laid the groundwork for India's entry into semiconductor manufacturing.
Building upon this foundation, the Cabinet had previously approved Micron's proposal for a semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat. Previously, Applied Materials and Lam Technologies also said they would invest $400 million in training 60,000 engineers in India.
In July last year, during the Semicon India 2023 conference, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled plans to introduce specialised courses on semiconductors in over 300 prominent colleges across India.
