As the cold wave and dense fog have been persisting across the national capital region, the Gautam Buddh Nagar administration on Saturday ordered all the schools in Noida and Greater Noida to remain closed. The order has been passed to follow for the students up to Class 8 and all the schools will be observing holidays till January 14.

The order issued by the District Basic Education Officer Rahul Panwar, states, “In compliance with the instructions given by District Magistrate Maneesh Kumar Verma given the dense fog and extreme cold, all the board (CBSE/ICSE IB, UP Board and others) affiliated schools (from Class nursery to 8) running in the district Gautam Buddh Nagar, will observe holiday till January 14.” It further mentions, “The order should be strictly followed.”
As per the order, it has been made applicable to all the schools recognised by the state board, CBSE, ICSE, IB, and others. Additionally, the District Inspector of Schools (DIOS), Dharamveer Singh highlighted the timings for the Class 9 to 12 as it will be operated from 10 AM to 3 PM till January 14.
Earlier on Friday, the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Council (UPBEC) announced a winter vacation for all the schools across the state. The directive applied to schools from pre-primary to Class 8.
The decision was taken after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘cold day’ alert for several states in the northern region of India. People across states like Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Uttarakhand have been alerted due to the worsening of the weather conditions.
As per the weather department’s data, Gautam Buddh Nagar recorded a minimum temperature of 9 degrees Celsius on Saturday, January 6. Alongside, the forecast indicates the temperature in the region to range between 9 to 13 degrees Celsius in the coming six days.
Besides, the sub-divisional warning suggests having cold wave conditions and fog for the weekend, while it has also been forecasted to have thunderstorms, lightning, and dense fog on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, confusion prevailed over the school opening in Delhi. Delhi's Directorate of Education, on Saturday night, withdrew an order extending winter vacation in schools in the national capital. Earlier in the day, the directorate said winter vacation in all government and private schools in the national capital had been extended till January 10.
A Delhi government official said that there was some error in the order. "The order extending winter break was incorrectly issued. The order has been withdrawn immediately. Decision on the same will be taken tomorrow morning," the official said.
The vacation in Delhi schools was scheduled to end on Saturday and classes were to resume on Monday, January 8.
Later Delhi Education Minister Atishi said that winter vacation in city schools had been extended till January 12 for primary class students.
"Schools in Delhi will remain closed for the next 5 days due to the prevailing cold weather conditions, for students from Nursery to Class 5," Atishi said on X.
