The National Medical Commission (NMC) on Monday released an official circular slashing the eligibility criteria for admissions in the Super Specialty medical courses.

The NMC release states the minimum eligibility requirement for applying to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test- Super Specialty (NEET-SS) has now been reduced by 20 percentile which was 50 previously.
The official notification issued on Monday, December 11 states, “The issue has been considered by the Ministry in consultation with the National Medical Commission (NMC). The NMC has recommended that the cut-off qualifying percentile for NEET SS-2023 may be reduced to 20 points. The recommendation of the NMC has been approved by the Hon'ble HFM. It is requested to take further necessary action in this matter”.
The significant move has been undertaken after the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), directed the National Board of Examination (NBE) to reduce the cut-off scale for the NEET-SS.
The NEET-SS 2023 examination was undertaken on September 29 and 30, this year. It was conducted as a single entrance examination to DM/ MCh/ DrNB Super Specialty courses. Currently, the first round of admissions of about 5,000 seats including the 150 seats in Gujarat is ongoing.
According to the Times of India’s report, experts have stated that the announcement made in the middle of an ongoing round will enable the admission committee to re-invite registrations to include the candidates who are now eligible as per the revised score criteria.
Reportedly, the decision to reduce the NEET cut-off score has been undertaken as the medical colleges that conduct postgraduate super specialty courses are suffering from losses every year as the seats under some specific branches such as plastic surgery and paediatrics among others remain vacant.
The annual fees for the courses in government colleges range from ₹1 lakh to ₹2 lakh, while in private colleges the fees range between ₹50 lakh to ₹3 crore a year.
The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences is expected to take further required actions to implement the revised cut-off for NEET SS-2023, following the ministry's directive.
