Not just a new job, 8 in 10 Indians want to switch industries this year but...
Many surveys have suggested that employees around the world will look for a change of job in 2024 but LinkedIn’s latest findings say 79% of professionals in India are eyeing not just a new job but a role in a different industry altogether.

LinkedIn’s research released on January 17 suggests that nearly nine in 10 (88%) of professionals in India are considering a new job this year. And, as professionals want to take responsibility for their careers and actively prioritise productivity and growth, nearly eight of 10 (79%) Indian professionals are seeking opportunities that are beyond their current industry or role.
“This signals a shift in attitudes where professionals are no longer willing to stick it out, instead, they’re taking ownership of their careers and want to make up for lost time by focusing on productivity and career growth. LinkedIn data shows that job search activity on its platform has increased by 9% in 2023 YoY, compared to 2022,” the report said.
However, the job hunt isn’t easy given the developments in the artificial intelligence space, which has prompted many companies to automate several roles and reduce headcount to minimise costs.
Nearly half (45%) of professionals surveyed by LinkedIn said they do not know how to match their skills to the job they want. In fact, 59% of the people said they rarely hear back from recruiters.
The research also shows that skills for jobs have changed by 30% since 2015 in India.
The top priorities and new cool roles
As many prior reports have indicated, work-life balance and the need for higher pay are the biggest motivators for changing jobs.
In India, closing manager, influencer marketing specialist, and design specialist are the top three fastest-growing jobs in 2024, with growth rates above 79%.
A change in job search approach
Nirajita Banerjee, Career Expert and Sr. Managing Editor for LinkedIn India, said, “As Indian professionals take charge of their careers in 2024, it’s going to get increasingly competitive with more professionals entering the job market.”
According to the report, 72% of professionals said they have changed their job search approach, such as experimenting with new formats such as video and digital resumes. They are also keen on using AI with around 81% of professionals saying it can help make their job hunt more efficient and productive.
Another key, professionals think, that is likely to increase their chances of landing a brand is investing in building their professional brand and tapping connections that can help them get more opportunities. This explains why 79% of professionals are posting more content on LinkedIn and 83% are becoming more active in growing their professional network, as per the report.
