'Zero percent' PG NEET cut-off means centre can't use 'merit' argument anymore: DMK

Tamil Nadu and the ruling DMK Government have been one of the earliest critics of NEET, especially at the under-graduate level, as it puts students from state board schools at a marked disadvantage.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's (MoHFW) notification approving the reduction in qualifying criteria for post-graduate medical seats is a validation of Tamil Nadu's Anti-NEET stance, said the DMK.

"The Union Government has validated that NEET (National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test) is not required for medical admissions," said party spokesperson A Saravanan in conversation with CNBC-TV18, "Post-graduate aspirants can get admission provided they have money to join colleges."
On Thursday, a central notification sent to the National Medical Commission (NMC) ordered the reduction of cut-off marks for post-graduate NEET candidates to zero percentile.
"Approval of competent authority is hereby conveyed for reduction of qualifying percentile for NEET PG 2023 to 'zero' across all categories," said the notification signed by Sunil Kumar Gupta, under-secretary to the union overnment.
The notification received harsh criticism from bodies like the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA), which called the zero-percentile directive, "ridiculous". "This is mockery of the standard of medical education and the healthcare system," said a post by FAIMA on social media platform, X.
Certain reports claim the reduction in qualifying cut-off for PG NEET was necessary as nearly 2,000 to 2,500 seats in super-specialty courses like biochemistry or physiology at private medical colleges go vacant every year. The DMK, however, claims, this is on account of high fee structures at these institutions.
"PG medical seats go vacant since candidates can't afford college fees," said Saravanan, "The Union Government should have ensured reduction of PG admission fees to fill seats. The coaching class mafia and medical college mafia are the only ones benefitting from NEET."
Tamil Nadu and the ruling DMK Government have been one of the earliest critics of NEET, especially at the under-graduate level, as it puts students from state board schools at a marked disadvantage.
In previous years, students from Tamil Nadu and other states have died by suicide after not making the cut-off for NEET and securing a medical seat. Most recently, suicides have been reported from West Bengal and Rajasthan owing to failed NEET attempts. The DMK has also pointed out that the Centre's promotion of the test is complicit support to coaching institutes.
In a social media post, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, reiterated his party's stance. "By reducing the NEET PG cut-off to 'zero', they (Centre) are accepting that 'eligibility in National 'Eligibility' Cum Entrance Test is meaningless," said Stalin, "It's just about coaching centres and paying for the exam. No more qualification is required."
In response to continuous criticism, the BJP and voices from the Centre have often pointed out to how NEET can ensure that merit is given due credit as far as medical entrance exams are concerned. "The Union Govt can't hide behind the fig leaf of merit when it comes to NEET, anymore," said Saravanan.
