Students commencing their Class X and Class XII from the 2024-25 academic session will have the opportunity to sit for the multiple board format.
This will be the inaugural batch to sit for the new format. A senior official at the Ministry of Education said that the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will conduct the first multiple board exams starting in 2025, except for 2021 when the CBSE board exams were split into two during the COVID-19 pandemic, The Times of India reported.
However, this new system of conducting the board exams for Class X and XII twice a year will not be mandatory, the ministry official stated.
The official told the national daily that with this new pattern, the system aims to "reduce stress on students who fear missing out on a single opportunity."
“If a candidate is prepared and is satisfied with the score in one set of exams, he can choose not to appear for the next exam,” the official said.
In August last year, the Ministry of Education announced the New Curriculum Framework (NCF).
It stated that the board examinations will be held at least twice a year so that the Class X and Class XII students can have enough time and opportunity to perform well. Also, the students will be provided the option of retaining the best score.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the students will have an option of appearing for the exams twice a year just like the engineering entrance exam JEE.
“They can choose the best score...but it will be completely optional, no compulsion... The students often get stressed thinking they lost a year, their chance is gone or that they could have performed better... the stress caused by the fear of (only) single opportunity will be reduced,” Pradhan told PTI.
The Union Minister noted that if a student thinks his preparation is complete and fully satisfied with the score in one set of exams, then the student will have the option of not appearing for the next exams.
“I met students after the NCF was announced. They have appreciated this and are happy with the idea. We are trying for the exams to be conducted twice a year from 2024 itself,” Pradhan said.
In 2023, a total of 38.82 lakh candidates appeared for the Class X and Class XII board exams of the Central Board of Secondary Education. Out of the total students, 21.86 lakh were from Class X and 16.96 lakh candidates appeared for Class XII exams.
According to reports, the first of the new boards is expected to be delivered in November-December this year, while the next one might be held in February-March 2025.
In the final results, the best of the two scores will be considered.
