To enforce privacy protection, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is going to implement Virtual ID (VID), a 16-digit random number mapped with the Aadhaar number from July 1, reported Mint.
The Virtual ID is being introduced as UIDAI's initiative to put multi-layered security to reinforce privacy protection for Aadhaar holders, allowing them to share VID instead of their Aadhar number during authentication, thus reducing collection of Aadhaar numbers by various agencies, said a UIDAI circular, the report said.
There will be only one active and valid VID for an Aadhaar number at any given time, which can be generated, replaced or revoked by the Aadhaar number holder, according to the report.
The VID can be generated from the UIDAI website, Aadhaar enrollment center or the mAadhaar app, the daily said, adding that the user needs to login and ensure the mobile phone number is linked with the Aadhaar database so that they can receive a one-time password (OTP) to generate VID.
The VID can be used especially for online customers doing OTP based e-KYC and authentication by the Authentication User Agency (AUA) in the same way Aadhaar number is used, the Mint added.
All banks-commercial banks, payment banks, regional banks, rural banks, cooperative banks, small finance banks; life insurance companies, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), prepaid payment instruments (PPIs), non-bank financial institutions (NBFCs), telecom operators and non-life insurance companies are part of the AUA where the Virtual IDs can be used.
