Top companies in the country are likely to stay away from Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) during this placement season, reported the Times of India. The firms are staying away this season due to the ongoing economic slowdown.
Some of the top firms, which usually are active participants and offer hefty compensation packages, have either declined offers from placement cells or are yet to confirm, the report said. They are reluctant to hire from the prestigious campuses despite significant efforts being made by the placement cells to reach out to newer firms for recruitment.
“We have lost a few companies which regularly visited us, but we are compensating for this by exploring newer avenues … Some of them have met their requirements from the pre-placement offers. We have increased the total number of companies visiting us this season to beat the ongoing slowdown,” a student representative from IIT-Kharagpur was quoted as saying in the Times of India report.
The first phase of the placement season is set to begin on December 1 and will last two to three weeks. While the report said that many IITs received significantly higher pre-placement offers compared to last year, most are expecting slightly lower hiring given the slowdown particularly in the auto sector.
