The tea industry is passing through a challenging period, said DP Maheshwari, MD and CEO, Jayshree Tea.
“ For the last two-three years, the market has now formed a pattern, good quality is being rewarded,” he said.
“Cost increase is tremendous and prices are not increasing. The industry in general is in real stress,” said Maheshwari.
The tea costs have gone up by Rs 50-60 per kg and the high quality tea sold at Rs 300-500 per kg, he said.
"There are negotiations to increase labour cost going on in Assam and this will lead to cost hike," he added.
We expect exports to support the revenue this time and would definitely like to buy more tea assets but not at the current valuations, said Maheshwari.
