RBI DG appointment: 1 RBI official, 3 IAS officers & 3 economists interviewed

A cabinet secretary headed search panel is learned to have interviewed seven candidates on November 7 for the RBI DG vacancy caused by Viral Acharya’s exit.

CNBC-TV18 learns, one RBI official, three IAS officers, and three economists are likely to have been interviewed by the high-level search panel for the RBI DG post.
Among the likely IAS background candidates who may have made it to the interview stage are Kshatrapati Shivaji, Arunish Chawla, and Manoj Govil.
Kshatrapati Shivaji is a 1986 batch Maharashtra cadre IAS, currently serving as ED in ADB. Manoj Govil is a 1991 batch MP cadre IAS currently serving as Principal Secretary Finance in the Madhya Pradesh govt. Arunish Chawla is a 1992 batch Bihar cadre IAS currently serving as Minister (economic) at the Indian embassy in Washington.
Both Govil and Chawla have worked in the finance ministry in different capacities. While Shivaji’s last posting before going to ADB was CMD, SIDBI. Earlier, he worked in various capacities in the Maharashtra government and his stint with the finance ministry was way back between 1998 to 2000.
Among the likely economists and serving RBI officials who have been interviewed for the important post is Michael Patra who is ED, RBI and possibly Monetary Policy Committee member and senior economist with the Indian Statistical Institute, Chetan Ghate. Apart from Ghate, two more economists are understood to have been interviewed.
The government’s order on the candidate who makes it as the fourth RBI deputy governor is likely to be out in a month.
