Viral Acharya, the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) youngest deputy governor post-economic liberalisation, has resigned six months before the scheduled end of his term, citing personal reasons. Acharya, who joined the central bank on January 23, 2017, for a three-year term, is returning to New York University Stern School of Business in August, instead of February 2020, as the CV Starr Professor of Economics.

In the last Monetary Policy Committee meeting, Acharya had raised concerns about the government's fiscal policies that keep pushing expenditures off budget to plug the deficit and then take recourse to borrowings from small savings funds. He had put in his papers a few weeks before the last meeting of the RBI’s monetary policy committee (MPC) early this month.
Acharya, since he joined the RBI, has only voted twice for a rate cut. He has been a part of 15 MPCs. Here is a quick look at his tenure at the RBI.
June 2019
Unanimous vote from all six members to cut rates by 25 bps.
April 2019
Acharya and Chetan Ghate voted against 25 bps rate cut, while all other members voted for a rate cut.
