Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, in an exclusive conversation with CNBC-TV18, said the government has received 746 applications for investments of ₹3.65 lakh crore in 14 PLI schemes. An investment of ₹1.03 lakh crore has already been received so far.
"Actual production/sales have already reached about ₹8.6 lakh crore. Actual employment has reached 6.78 lakh persons. The beauty of the scheme is that so far we've actually disbursed from government coffers only about ₹2,900 odd crores," he said.
Asked about expanding this plan to other sectors, Singh said that may come later. He mentioned that tweaking of existing schemes is an option to ensure enhanced implementation.
"What we are concentrating on right now is ensuring that the 14 sectors across 10 departments that are currently under implementation... those PLI schemes should get implemented successfully and thereafter... one can look at those options."
Singh didn't specify any sector which may see tweaks in PLI schemes, stating "It is a part of the inter-ministerial consultation process." These tweaks, as per him, may see the daylight in this financial year itself.
"But I can tell you there are some four or five sectors where we think that some tweaking may be required to ensure better results," he added.
“Whenever we release money, we ensure that investment first comes in, employment is generated, factories start functioning and only thereafter does the question of disbursement really arise,” he said.
DPIIT is a central government department under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
