Justice Ranjan Gogoi on Wednesday took charge as the new Chief Justice of India, replacing Dipak Misra who retired on Monday.
Gogoi is the first Supreme Court judge from north-east to be appointed as CJI and will hold the position till November 2019.
Born on November 18, 1954, son of former Assam chief minister late Keshab Chandra Gogoi, he joined the bar in 1978.
He was appointed as the permanent judge of Guwahati High Court on February 28, 2001. In 2010, he was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, after which he was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court on April 23, 2012.
Some of the important cases that Gogoi will be focusing on are the Ayodhya title suit and the National Register for Citizens (NRC) in Assam.
