The government is aiming to export Indian movies to less-export markets like the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Ukraine, The Economic Times reported, citing officials.
The government's plan comes after the success of Aamir Khan’s ‘3 Idiots’ in China and Sridevi’s ‘Mom’ in Russia, said the report, adding that the centre wants to promote Indian content in countries that do not have substantial Indian presence and have access to pirated and poorly dubbed Bollywood cinemas at their dispense to watch.
“The success of ‘3 Idiots’ in China has given great confidence to the industry that Indian films can do well in captive and not so captive markets outside. Indian cinema is largest after Hollywood and known for its lively and emotional content,” Mohit Singla, chairman of Trade Promotion Council of India, an organisation under the Department of Commerce said, as reported by ET.
Bollywood films, traditionally get an opening in the UK, the US and Australia due to Indians present in such countries in large numbers, the report said, adding that after CIS, the centre is eyeing ASEAN and Saudi Arabia next for releasing films.
