Delhi Metro’s daily ridership soars to 60 lakh, receives ₹500 crore in 2024-25 Budget

In the 2024-25 Budget, the Delhi government has allocated Rs 500 crore to the Delhi Metro, which is the largest and busiest rapid transit system in India.

The metro system, which connects the capital region with its satellite cities, is operated by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. This public sector company was established by the government of India and the government of Delhi in May 1995.
Delhi Finance Minister Atishi, while presenting the budget, stated that providing good public transportation facilities to every resident of the national capital is the government’s responsibility.
She highlighted that under the guidance of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, significant improvements have been made in the public transportation sector in Delhi.
Atishi also shared some impressive statistics about the growth of the Delhi Metro. In 2014, around 24 lakh passengers used the service daily. However, today, more than 60 lakh people commute on the metro every day.
By March 2015, a total of 193 kilometres of metro network and 143 stations were established in Delhi. In the past nine years, the network has doubled in length to 393 kilometres, and the number of stations has increased to 288.
The Delhi Metro now reaches every corner of Delhi, including the Tikri border, Samaypur Badli, Tikri Kalan, Badarpur border, and Shiv Vihar. The total outlay of the 2024-25 Budget is 76,000 crore. In this financial year, Atishi proposed an outlay of 500 crore specifically for the Delhi Metro.
