An unexpected spike in electricity demand in the wake of a shortage in coal supply has pushed several power plants towards outages, reported The Indian Express.
More than 10,500 MW of power plants have cited ‘coal shortage’ for shutting their units downs, the report said citing the government data. Out of this, 2,700 MW and 4,210 MW went under outage in September and October, respectively, the report added.
As on October 16, as many as 33 power plants, had fuel stock to last for less than seven days, the report said.
The affected plants are largely situated in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana and Chhattisgarh and the lack of transportation infrastructure to ferry coal supplies from far away mines has compounded the problem, the report said.
