The government will step up on the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) to enhance aquaculture productivity to five tonnes per hectare from the current three tonnes, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in her Budget 2024 speech on February 1.
"It was our government which set up a separate department for fisheries realising the importance of assisting fishermen. This has resulted in doubling of both inland and aquaculture production. Seafood export since 2013-14 has also doubled," Sitharaman said in her sixth Budget speech.
The government also aims to double exports under the scheme to ₹1 lakh crore, and generate 55 lakh employment opportunities in the near future.
It will also set up five integrated aqua parks, Sitharaman said.
The PMMSY scheme, with a substantial investment of ₹20,050 crore, is aimed at transforming India's fisheries sector.
Designed to address critical gaps in the fisheries value chain from fish production, productivity, and quality to technology, post-harvest infrastructure, and marketing, the PMMSY is being implemented in all states and union territories for a five-year period, from the 2020-21 to the 2024-25 fiscal years.
The government had created about 45.59 lakh employment opportunities PMMSY scheme as of the end of December.
