Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday, February 1, announced a marginal increase in the allocation to the state-owned National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The budget for 2024-25 sees a marginal uptick, reaching ₹1.68 lakh crore, compared to the revised allocation of ₹1.67 lakh crore in the previous year.
The pre-election budget document outlines a slightly augmented outlay of ₹2.78 lakh crore for the highways sector, emphasising the government's continued focus on infrastructure development. In the fiscal year 2023-24, an allocation of ₹2.70 lakh crore had initially been made for the highways sector, later revised to ₹2.76 lakh crore.
NHAI and National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) are primarily responsible for the construction of national highways and expressways in India.
