Chennai-based Matrimony.com, the parent company of BharatMatrimony, expects third-quarter profits to dip due to provisions related to Google's billing system. Matrimony.com recently filed a case in the Madras High Court alleging high commission and discriminatory practices by Google Play services.

Sushanth Pai, CFO of Matrimony.com, shed light on the ongoing legal battle with Google in a chat with CNBC-TV18.
"This is going to be a long-drawn sort of a case. It's right now with the High Court of Madras. We also appealed to the CCI on another ground in terms of Google having discriminatory practices against us. So that will also take its own time. However, in light of prudence, we have to provide something in the financials," Pai said.

While exact financial details remain undisclosed due to the sensitivity of the ongoing litigation, Pai noted that the profitability would have been at least 300 basis points higher in terms of PAT margin if not for the Google service fee.
The conflict with Google emerged after the tech giant mandated all app developers, including Bharat Matrimony, to use its Google Play Billing System (GPBS) for transactions, levying a commission of 15 to 30%. The petitioners, including Bharat Matrimony, approached the Madras High Court seeking an injunction against Google's billing system.
In the second quarter, Matrimony.com's consolidated profit grew 7%, reaching 12.5 crore from 11.7 crore in the same period last year. The consolidated revenue from operations saw a 6% increase, reaching 121.59 crore from 114.86 crore a year ago.
Despite the ongoing dispute impacting short-term financials, Matrimony.com remains focused on its core business, with about 98% of its revenue stemming from matchmaking services under BharatMatrimony. The company continues to navigate the legal complexities, emphasizing the significance of the issue for the broader app development community.
The firm's market capitalisation stands at 1,286 crore.
