Google on Thursday honoured Bollywood legend Madhubala on her 86th birth anniversary with a doodle of her iconic character from "Mughal-E-Azam", Anarkali.
The doodle is of a still from her dance number“Mohe Panghaat Pe”.
Madhubala ruled millions of hearts with her beauty, grace and charm, especially as Anarkali. She was known for her soft and sensitive roles in films and was named “The Biggest Star In The World” in 1952 by Theatre Arts Magazine.
"The Marilyn Monroe of Bollywood", as the Google blog post said, was raised in the slums of Bombay and supported her family as a child actress at the age of nine and rose to become a leading lady in Indian cinema. She starred opposite Dilip Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar in her glory days.
In 1949, she appeared in nine films, including blockbuster 'Mahal' opposite Ashok Kumar, when she dazzled with a spell-binding breakout performance.
Madhubala, a gifted actor with an understated style starred in over 70 movies in her lifetime and was well suited for comedies, dramas and romance. Her bright career took a tragic turn when she passed away on February 23, 1969, from a prolonged illness at the age of 36.
The government of India, a decade ago in 2008, released a postage stamp commemorating her contributions to the field of arts and cinema.
