India's rising cricketing sensation
Shubman Gill, was awarded the coveted "Sports Leader of the Year" award at the 19th edition of CNBC-TV18's
India Business Leader Awards (IBLA), held in Mumbai on December 2.
The award is a testament to his meteoric rise in international cricket, marking him as a force to reckon with for the future.
Hailing from Fazilka, Punjab, 24-year old Gill's journey began with India's Under-19 team, which went on to win the World Cup in New Zealand back in 2018 under another rising star Prithvi Shaw's leadership. While Shaw has been in-and-out of the national side due to injuries and other issues, Gill has cemented the second opener's spot alongside captain Rohit Sharma, post a series of consistent performances, including an ODI double century.
Gill made his ODI debut in January 2019 against New Zealand at Hamilton. His test debut came a year later, at the iconic Boxing Day test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
At 24, Gill is the youngest player to score an ODI double century. He is also the fastest to 2,000 runs in ODIs, taking him to the top spot of the ICC rankings of this format. He scored four half centuries in the recently concluded Cricket World Cup, after missing the first two games due to dengue.
In September 2023, Gill was named the ICC's Men's Player of the Month, following his exploits at the Asia Cup. He also scored 890 runs in this edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), thereby winning the orange cap and becoming the second-highest run getter ever in a season.
Gill is also the youngest player to score a century in every format of the game, redefining batting in the modern era with his elegant strokeplay.
With such extraordinary accomplishments at a young age, Shubman Gill is all set to lead the Gujarat Titans as their captain in the next edition of the IPL. His meteoric rise in cricket is a testament to his skill, dedication, and the promise of an even brighter future in the sport. Gill's recognition at the
IBLA 2023 not only celebrates his current successes but also heralds him as a leading figure in the future of Indian cricket.
