Former HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh believes that the best for India is yet to come and that he is never been more optimistic of the country's future as he is now.
Parekh was inducted in the Hall of Fame award at the 19th edition of CNBC-TV18's India Business Leader Awards (IBLA) held in Mumbai on December 2.
"I would like to see India's ride ahead and claim its rightful, honourable place in history and I have been saying this for the last few months that in my last fifty-odd years of working in India, I have never been more optimistic as I have been today," he said.
Parekh dedicated this award to the erstwhile employees of HDFC Ltd., which was merged with HDFC Bank earlier this year. "No one person can build an institution," he said, adding that it requires support, patient, staff and management.
NPCI MD & CEO Dilip Asbe shared an anecdote about the first house bought by his father in the suburb of Borivali in Mumbai courtesy of a ₹2 lakh loan availed from HDFC Ltd. "I remember the installment too, it was ₹3,060 per month," Asbe said.
Parekh explained that the institution (HDFC) had become too big and hence had to be merged with the bank, making it a large bank. Today, the merged entity of HDFC Bank is the fifth largest bank in the world by market capitalisation.
