Anshu Sharma caught up with Rahul Sharma, CEO of Vedanta's alumina business to get a sense of the production outlook as well as the capacity utilisation.
He said that growth is likely to double in next 5 years.
Rahul said, "Last year we have achieved production of 1.5 million which is 25 percent growth from the previous year and this year we will be targeting 2 million tonne of capacity. Going forward we are also looking at expansion in a phased manner."
He further added: "As far as bauxite outlook is concerned, we are very happy. Post MMDR Act, now the government is going to auction and we are going to participate seriously and we are aiming for it."
On coal he said, "In the past one or two years there were lot of challenges which we have faced from aluminium point of view but last quarter I would say that there was a big jump in terms of Coal India production, the government has been supportive. For the first time in the last 6 quarters, a balance has been made which is 25 percent CPP and 75 percent of IPP.
"Only our request to the government will be that please maintain the same ratio, so our request to the government would be that please maintain the same ratio because CPP and IPP both are equally important because that is how you balance industry versus the consumer."
