Micron Technologies, a global leader in memory chips, unveiled its plans for the upcoming semiconductor facility in Gujarat on Wednesday, January 10, at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra informed that the facility, set to be operational by early 2025, is poised to generate 20,000 jobs, significantly contributing to India's semiconductor aspirations.
The announcement was made during Sanjay Mehrotra's address at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit, where he emphasised the tremendous opportunity for India in the semiconductor industry.
Earlier, the company had announced that Micron is building a 1.4 million-square-foot semiconductor facility in Sanand, Gujarat, India. The facility will include 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space and is expected to be operational by early 2025.
Micron's four-decade legacy as an innovator at the heart of all computing systems positions the company as a powerhouse in memory chips, he said during the event.
The ambitious project has already initiated phased construction in partnership with Tata, he informed.
Micron's investment is not just about infrastructure; it's about jobs. The semiconductor giant plans to create 5,000 direct jobs and a staggering 15,000 indirect jobs, providing a significant boost to the local economy.
The total investment in Micron's semiconductor unit is estimated to be around $2.75 billion, making it one of the largest investments in the semiconductor sector in India.
The facility is the largest investment under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). Micron is contributing $825 million, with the rest coming from state and central government subsidies.
Micron is a US chipmaking giant that specialises in memory, storage, and semiconductor technologies. Their memory is used in a variety of applications, including AI, automotive, mobile, data center, and client.
Sanjay Mehrotra expressed confidence that Micron's investment would act as a catalyst, initiating a cluster of semiconductor investments in the region. The move aligns with Vibrant Gujarat's vision of providing visionary ideas critical for India's growth as a semiconductor power.
