Elon Musk has initiated legal action against OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, alleging a deviation from its original mission and a transformation into a profit-oriented entity in collaboration with Microsoft. The legal action specifically targets OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman and President Gregory Brockman.
Elon Musk, a former board member of OpenAI, claims that the company has strayed from its initial goal of developing AI for the public good, and is now prioritising profit generation for Microsoft.
In a lawsuit filed in San Francisco Superior Court on February 29, Musk accused OpenAI of breaching its contractual obligations, violating fiduciary duties, and engaging in unfair business practices.
He contended that OpenAI has departed from its foundational principles and demands a return to its former status as an open-source platform.
Musk has sought an injunction to prevent Microsoft and top OpenAI officials from benefiting financially from AI technology.
Musk claimed that Altman was removed as CEO of OpenAI but was reinstated with Microsoft's intervention.
Additionally, Musk asserted that board members critical of Altman were pressured to resign by Microsoft. He said the current board lacked sufficient expertise in artificial intelligence and technology.
Elon Musk resigned from the OpenAI board in 2018 due to disagreements regarding the development of GPT-4 and concerns over the potential risks of AGI technology. He has expressed apprehensions about the implications of such technology for public safety.
