The Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance government that took oath on Thursday has appointed Hardeep Singh Puri as the minister of civil aviation.
Puri will also take charge as the minister of state (independent charge) of the ministry of housing and urban affairs, and the minister of state in the ministry of commerce and industry.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a landslide 303 seats out of the total of 543 while the opposition Congress party won just eight more seats than its abysmal 2014 performance. In all, BJP and its allies -- the NDA -- won 353 seats with the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance topped 92 seats.
The post was earlier held by Suresh Prabhu of the BJP. A chartered accountant by profession, Prabhu has been a repeatedly elected Member of Parliament from Rajapur Lok Sabha constituency in Maharashtra as a member of the Shiv Sena. He quit Shiv Sena and joined BJP in 2014. He currently represents Andhra Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha.
