DGCA conducted 5,745 surveillances in 2023, fined airlines ₹2.75 cr

As the measures taken by DGCA are at an all-time high, the surveillance activities increased by 26% in 2023 in comparison to the previous year.

India's civil aviation regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) undertook all-time high oversight measures in 2023. DGCA undertook several measures to ensure that the entire aviation ecosystem in India is adhering to safety norms and regulations.

The civil aviation regulator conducted 5,745 surveillances which included 4,039 planned surveillances and 1,706 spot checks and night surveillances. While the measures taken by DGCA are at an all time high, in comparison to 2022, the surveillance activities increased by 26%. The financial penalties imposed by DGCA in 2023 totalled to 2.75 crore, which is an increase of 39% versus 2022. In 2022, DGCA imposed financial penalties of 1.9 crore.
The aviation regulator conducted surveillance and checks on airlines, aerodrome operators, approved organizations and aviation personnel. In total 542 enforcement actions were taken in 2023, which is an increase of 77%. In 2022, 305 enforcement actions were carried out.
Significant enforcement actions for the year 2023 included suspension of the Approved Training Organization of Air India. Financial penalties were also imposed on Air India, Air Asia, IndiGo and SpiceJet for various non-compliances. Enforcement actions were also taken on erring pilots, cabin crew, Air Traffic Control Officers (ATCOs), non-scheduled airlines, flying training organizations and aerodrome operators.
