Celebi Aviation Holding India, the local arm of the Turkish ground handling services company, has introduced environment-friendly semi-robotic Taxibots at Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), making it the first airport in the world to use the service.
TaxiBots are semi-robotic aircraft taxiing vehicles that can reduce air pollution by cutting emissions from aircraft engines as well as fuel consumption by a whopping 85 percent.
Celebi has already deployed two Taxibots at the Delhi airport, which will tow narrow-body aircraft from the terminal gate to the take-off point, when the engines are turned off. Soon, DIAL will have three more of these, said the company in a statement on Wednesday.
The ground handling services provider aims to provide commercially operational Taxibots to DIAL for the next 10 years. Each Taxibot costs up to 1.5 million euros, the statement said.
The semi-robotic Taxibots aim to reduce fuel consumption by 85 percent, bring down the emission of carbon dioxide and other noxious gases by 85 percent and also check noise pollution at the airports by 60 percent. These bots will be pilot-controlled.
Apart from this, the bots will also help reduce the Foreign Object Damage (FOD) by 50 percent, ensuring safety and lessen congestion at the airports.
"In line with our vision, the Taxibots too will aid in reducing fuel cost, improving apron usage and reducing harmful gas emissions," Murali Ramachandran, CEO-India at Çelebi Aviation, said in the statement.
