Financial and operational troubles at India's top airlines Jet Airways and IndiGo have led to a surge in air ticket prices for some of the busiest routes in India. The two were operating around 2,000 flights on a daily basis.
Cash-strapped Jet Airways grounded 25 aircraft as the airline is unable to pay lessors the dues as per the lease agreements. The airline has been cancelling flights on a daily basis. On February 28, the airline cancelled 60 flights due to operational issues.
IndiGo said it will cancel 30 daily flights till the end of this month. Reports have suggested that this is because the airline is facing a shortage of pilots and they're unable to accommodate their growing fleet.
There are also flight disruptions in Mumbai at the International airport due to runway repair work till March 30.
The flight fares have risen by around 40-50 percent if we compare the past flight fares to what might be in store for us. A round trip from Mumbai to New Delhi for the last weekend of March, that is from March 29 to March 31, would cost a minimum of Rs 6,385, according to MakeMyTrip.
Air ticket prices for Mumbai to Chennai and Kolkata also rage between Rs 7,000 and Rs 8,000. Mumbai-Bangalore, which is another busy route, has flight fares coming up to Rs 5,000, according to MakeMyTrip.
Normal air ticket rates for these routes are at least cheaper by Rs 1,000-Rs 2,000 if booked three weeks in advance.
