As Ayodhya gears up for the grand opening ceremony of the Ram Mandir and the ‘Pran-Pratishtha’ or consecration ceremony of Ram Lalla’s idol on January 22, 2024, Air India Express has announced the commencement of services from Ayodhya International Airport.
This development of Air India Express, a subsidiary of the Tata group's Air India, is expected to facilitate the travel of a large number of devotees planning to visit the holy city. Ayodhya has become the airline's 45th destination and its third operational sector in Uttar Pradesh.
The inaugural flight IX 2789 is scheduled to depart from Delhi at 11:00 hrs on December 30, 2023, and land in Ayodhya at 12:20 hrs. The return flight, IX 1769, will depart from Ayodhya for Delhi at 12:50 hrs and arrive at 14:10 hrs.

According to the company statement, this launch underlines Air India Express’s commitment to enhancing connectivity from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities across India as it anticipates growth in Ayodhya, attracting pilgrims and travellers from near and far.
On January 16, 2024, the process for the ‘Pran-Pratishtha’ or consecration ceremony of Ram Lalla will start with all Vedic rituals, which will be performed and led by the Vedic scholar from Varanasi, Pandit Laxmikanth Mathuranath Dixit.
The daily non-stop flights between Ayodhya and Delhi will commence on January 16, 2023, with the schedule as follows:
Aloke Singh, Managing Director of Air India Express, expressed his enthusiasm about the new operations and said, “Air India Express is excited to commence operations from Ayodhya right after the airport opens... We’re enthusiastic about Ayodhya’s anticipated growth, attracting pilgrims and travellers from near and far and take pride in being part of this exciting growth story.”
According to reports, around 8,000 people have been sent invitations for the ceremony. Over 4,000 saints from across the country have also been invited to the event. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the mega event in Ayodhya on January 22.
In addition to Delhi, Air India Express will also connect Ayodhya to destinations such as Bhubaneswar, Bengaluru, Kochi, Guwahati, Goa, Gwalior, Jaipur, Pune, Surat, Srinagar, and Sharjah. Bookings are available through its mobile app, website airindiaexpress.com and other booking platforms.
The airline currently operates from Lucknow and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, connecting these cities with Dubai, Sharjah, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune with direct flights.
Recently, Air India Express also became the first airline to operate a direct flight from Surat to Dubai on the day when the Surat International Airport had its new international terminal inaugurated. The airline operates over 300 flights daily, connecting 31 domestic and 14 international airports, with a fleet of 59 aircraft, comprising 31 Boeing 737s and 28 Airbus A320s.
