Swedish auto giant Volvo Cars has announced that it will become the first company to assemble plug-in hybrids in India. The company officials said on Thursday that the company aims to locally assemble plug-in hybrid variant of its premium SUV XC 90 in India from next year.
The company also announced that all its cars to be produced from next year will be either of mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid variant.
"We are going to be the first car company to assemble plug-in hybrid cars locally in India. The first model would be introduced in the last quarter of next year. The localisation of plug-in hybrids marks the future of electrification for us," Volvo Car India Managing Director Charles Frump told reporters.
Frump added that the company’s ambition is to have a million electric cars on the road by 2025. He further added that Volvo Cars will use its Bengaluru facility to produce a 'Make in India' Plug In hybrid, making it the first company to do so. He further added that the company would also continue to look at opportunities to introduce full battery electric vehicles in the country.
