Tata and HPCL to set up 5,000 EV charging stations across India by 2024

Homegrown electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. (TPEM), on Wednesday, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) to establish public charging stations across India.

With this MoU, both companies aim to encourage more people to adopt electric vehicles in the country and improve the experience of EV owners. They are also considering the introduction of a co-branded RFID card for a hassle-free charging experience.

Balaje Rajan, Chief Strategy Officer at TPEM and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. (PMPV), in a company statement, said, “As the adoption of EVs increases, the availability of widespread and dependable charging infrastructure will play a crucial role in making EVs mainstream in India. This strategic partnership with HPCL emphasises our dedication to advancing India’s EV ecosystem.”

TPEM, which commands a market share of more than 68% in electric passenger vehicles, has recently introduced its first EV-exclusive store in Gurugram and worked with various charge point operators to grow India’s charging infrastructure.

Debashis Chakraverty, Chief General Manager, Retail Strategy & BD, HPCL, added, "HPCL shall leverage Tata Motors’ vehicle base to enable our strategic expansion in EV Charging infrastructure at places with higher charging demand and will help in reducing range anxiety of EV customers.”

HPCL, which claims to have a nationwide network of around 21,500 fuel stations, aims to install 5,000 electric vehicle charging stations by December 2024.

In addition to this, TPEM, in December 2023, signed an MoU with charge point operators (CPOs) — Chargezone, Glida, Statiq, and Zeon — to set up more than 10,000 charging points in India by FY25.
