The renowned ‘Skyline’ name from Nissan is set to make a comeback as an electric vehicle (EV), according to a media report. The forthcoming Nissan Skyline models will be available as an SUV and a potent electric fastback.
The new Skyline SUV, based on the Nissan Ariya, is anticipated to make its debut as early as 2025. This electric SUV is expected to deliver around 450 BHP of power and will be marketed in the US under the Infiniti brand.
In addition, there will be a 4-door fastback version equipped with a dual-motor configuration, powering all four wheels and generating approximately 443 BHP.
The ‘Nissan Skyline’ holds a significant place in the brand’s sports car history. The nameplate originated in 1969 when Nissan merged with Prince Motor Company, the original creators of Skyline.
The Skyline underwent numerous facelifts and even had GT-R versions. However, it gained prominence in 1989 with the R32 Skyline GT-R. Subsequently, in the 90s, the Skyline GT-R models were affectionately dubbed “Godzilla”.
Earlier this year, Nissan unveiled an electric R32 Skyline GT-R. However, it was merely a conversion project by the brand. This move signifies Nissan’s commitment to electric mobility, further cementing its position in the EV market.
The ‘Skyline’ name also holds a special place in pop culture, particularly due to its association with the “Fast and Furious” movie franchise. The character Brian, played by Paul Walker, drove a modified Nissan Skyline in the 2 Fast 2 Furious film. This silver Nissan R34 GT-R Skyline quickly became an icon of early 2000s car culture.
Interestingly, this car was built specifically for Paul Walker’s character and was driven extensively throughout the Fast & Furious 4 film. This association of the Skyline with the beloved character of Brian in the globally popular franchise has only added to the allure of the ‘Skyline’ name.
Now, with Nissan’s announcement of the Skyline’s comeback as an EV, fans of the franchise and car enthusiasts alike have something exciting to look forward to.
