Maruti Suzuki's December sales drop 1.3% as small-cars find less takers; Ciaz outshines

India's largest passenger carmaker Maruti Suzuki on Tuesday said its sales for the month of December 2018 fell 1.3 percent, at 1,28,338 units. The company had sold 1,30,066 units in the same month of last year.

Biggest drop of 36.4 percent for the company came from export markets where it managed to sell only 6,859 units as against 10,780 units in the same period of last year.
Sales of it passenger cars fell 4.7 percent with mini-cars like Alto, Wagon R falling 14 percent in sales, from 32, 146 units to 27,661 units in December 2018. Sales of compact cars like Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno and Dzire fell 3.8 percent, at 51,334 units.
However, its midsized car Ciaz sold 4,734 units as against 2,382 units, registering a growth of 98.7 percent.
Sales of vans and utility vehicles rose 38.8 percent and 4.9 percent, respectively.
Total domestic sales for Maruti Suzuki rose 1.8 percent in December 2018.
Shares of the company reacted to the sales numbers and fell 0.50 percent on the BSE Sensex. At 10.12 am, the company's shares were being traded at Rs 7,425 per share, down Rs 37.30.
