Maruti Suzuki India is doubling down on compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered vehicles, as the car maker steps up efforts to meet the upcoming fuel efficiency norms, Mint reported.
Maruti has asked dealerships to bid for licences to set up their own CNG dispensing stations, the newspaper reported citing four people aware of the development.
Maruti's target of selling 2,00,000 CNG vehicles by 2022 will comprise about 10-12 percent of its annual sales, the report said. The company has sold about half a million CNG cars between 2010 and 2018.
The auto major is basing its CNG plans in line with the government's scheme to introduce Bharat Stage VI emission norms in 2020.
