General Motors lets go of 200 employees due to UAW strike, US automakers’ layoffs surpass 800
American multinational automotive manufacturing firm General Motors on October 9 announced 200 additional job cuts due to the United Auto Workers strike, which adds a sixth affected plant, news agency Reuters reported. This takes the total number of layoffs of striking workers to above 800.

The Detroit automaker last week said about 2,100 workers had been impacted by the strike of two of its assembly plants in Missouri and Michigan and 18 parts distribution centres. In a fresh statement cited by Reuters on October 9, GM said about 2,300 workers are now impacted, including 70 layoffs at its Lansing, Michigan, stamping plant and about 70 additional layoffs at a Toledo, Ohio, plant.
The automaker GM said workers are not expected to return until the strike is resolved.
Earlier on October 8, Ford had said that it had let go of another 70 workers in Michigan, which brings the total layoffs at the firm to 1,865 since the strike began.
Chrysler-parent Stellantis, too, said it was laying off another 570 workers — 520 at its Trenton, Michigan engine plant and 50 at an Indiana casting plant. Stellantis has attributed the layoffs to storage constraints with the total number going up to 640 layoffs, a CNBC report said.
The layoffs come against the backdrop of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union launching an indefinite strike on September 15 at three US auto plants after failing to reach an agreement over new labour contracts.
This is the first-ever labour action against the Detroit three automakers — General Motors, Ford Motor, and Chrysler parent Stellantis.
The UAW represents 46,000 GM workers, 57,000 Ford employees and 43,000 Stellantis workers. The union had kicked off negotiations with the firms in July.
