FASTag mandatory for all vehicles from December 1: Here's where you can buy it
Beginning December 1 this year, FASTags will become mandatory for all vehicles across India, as announced by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. Introduced in 2014, FASTags are prepaid tags for toll collection that allow automatic payment without the need to stop at toll plazas for transactions. The system uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to deduct the toll fees from the owners’ accounts. Once active, the tags are affixed on the windscreen of vehicles.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced that all lanes at all toll plazas on national highways will be dedicated exclusive FASTag lanes from December 1, 2019, and non-FASTag users will be charged double the fee if they pass through these lanes, according to the National Highway Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008.
If you don’t have a FASTag yet, here’s a guide to help you know where to get one, supporting documents, and charges:
  • The tags can be bought at all toll plazas, online markets (such as Amazon), and at issuer agencies (like banks). Some banks, including SBI, HDFC and ICICI, have enquiry forms that can be filled up online. Once a query is generated, customers can visit the office to fill up a mandatory form and submit all the necessary documents to create a FASTag account.
  • The documents required for a FASTag issue are a vehicle registration certificate, Know Your Customer (KYC) documents of the owner – Aadhar card, PAN card, driving license – for identity and address proofs, and a passport-size photograph of the customer.
  • On registration, a one-time fee of Rs 200 is imposed by the issuer. Additionally, a refundable deposit is also charged, the cost of which depends on the type of vehicle. This amount is refunded on the closure of a FASTag account.
    • The account is managed by the web portal of the issuer agency. This enables FASTags to be recharged via debit and credit cards, RTGS, NEFT or NetBanking. Online recharges are subject to convenience fees, and there are minimum threshold amounts for recharge, based on the vehicle.
