There is a big focus on compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles now. The CNG has come out as a viable proposition and in fact, it’s becoming mainstream, said Shashank Srivastava, ED-marketing and sales at Maruti Suzuki, on Tuesday.

Passenger vehicle giant Maruti Suzuki is looking to expand its CNG portfolio. The government is now focusing on expanding the pool on CNG in the overall fuel basket.
Speaking in an interview to CNBC-TV18, Srivastava said, “CNG has come out as a viable proposition and in fact, it’s becoming mainstream especially in those areas where you have a lot of CNG stations. The reasons why CNG has gained so much prominence is because it is environment friendly, it is less polluting than other fuels and the cost for running CNG is extremely small.”
“The government has given a lot of support in terms of expansion of CNG network and I suppose this will help the overall sales as well,” he said.
Talking about business, Srivastava said semiconductor shortage is due to lower projections by auto companies in the pandemic.
“It’s largely because the demand for auto sector has gone up dramatically and 80 percent of precious metal demand is from auto sector and it’s produced only in two countries – South Africa and Russia where the production was down due to pandemic. Therefore, supply-demand mismatch has led to high increases and this is going to reflect hugely in the cost which are currently incurred for producing vehicles,” he said.
