With almost a fortnight to the vote-on-account, anticipation is building up about the possibility of a farm loan package being announced.

At the recently concluded BJP convention, where a resolution was adopted to deal with the farm sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the government did not believe in half-baked measures and his government policies would take time but the gains would be seen in the long-term.
Meanwhile, there have been questions raised about the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana. Government's reply to an RTI query recently showed that it is the insurance companies who have majorly benefited from this scheme with their profits shooting up from Rs 6,000 crore to Rs 9,000 between FY17 and FY18.
The government is also considerng an income support scheme to address the farmers' issue and a final decision is awaited.
CNBC-TV18 caught up TN Prakash Kammardi, chairman, Karnataka Agriculture Prices Commission; P Chengal Reddy, chief advisor, consortium of Indian farmers' associations; Siraj Hussain, former agriculture secretary and Yogendra Yadav, founder, Swaraj Abhiyan, to discuss the farmers' woes and the government policies.
Yogendra Yadav said, “Farmers are demanding legally guaranteed remunerative prices with a statutory farmers commission in charge of income."
Siraj Hussain said, “So far thinking within the government has been that another scheme for income transfer without any modification in the existing system of subsidies is going to be wasteful. After the elections, because of the pressure built by media, the government is seriously considering an income transfer scheme.
TN Prakash, "Farmers have given abundance to the nation but at the cost of the crisis. If you want to address the issues related to the crisis, woes we have to think something beyond routine, beyond obvious."
