Loan waivers fail to mitigate farm distress in rural India, says report
The government data has indicated that the efforts taken to tackle farm distress has failed as they leave out 14.43 crore agricultural labourers, reported The HinduBusiness Line .

The data, as mentioned in the report, highlights 16,324 farm labourers and 20,008 farmers committed suicide between 2014 and 2016. Of the total agricultural suicides during this period, suicides by farm labourers constitute 45 percent.
Farm-loan waivers benefit farmers and not farm labourers, Suvarna Katrale, a landless farm labourer from Osmanabad district of Maharashtra told the newspaper.
The farm labourers crisis may worsen as World Bank predicted that the percentage of agricultural workers in the total workforce can drop to 25.7 percent by 2050 from the 58.2 percent in 2001, the report said.
