Rishi Sunak is one step closer to becoming British Prime Minister with his former boss, Boris Johnson, pulling out of the race on Sunday. In a statement, Johnson said that in the interests of party unity, he would not join the race this week for his old job.
Johnson's decision, which the ex-leader said he had reached reluctantly after recognising he would not lead "a united party in parliament", removes a major obstacle to his political foe, former finance minister Rishi Sunak, news agency AFP reported.
Sunak, the 42-year-old former chancellor, has held a solid lead in the contest having comfortably surpassed the 100-MPs threshold to make the shortlist in time for the 1400 local time Monday deadline.
