A train collision between a freight train and a passenger train on Monday (October 23) in the Bhairab upazila of Kishoreganj, Bangladesh, has left at least 15 individuals dead and over 100 others severely injured.
The accident transpired when a freight train en route to Chattogram violently collided with the Dhaka-bound Egaro Sindur Express, around 3:30 pm local time, the Bhairab Railway Police Station duty officer, Sirajul Islam, told the media.
"Fifteen bodies have been recovered so far from the wreckage. Death toll could rise," informed Shahjahan Sikder, the media chief of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Sikder disclosed that over a dozen units of the fire service are actively engaged in the rescue operations, seeking to free survivors and retrieve the deceased from the tangled mass of wreckage.
Reports from the scene have suggested that numerous people were trapped underneath the shattered carriages, adding to the complexity of the ongoing rescue efforts. A police official stationed at the Bhairab Railway Station conveyed, "Several passengers were caught beneath the damaged coaches."
In an initial assessment of the incident, Anowar Hossain, the superintendent of Dhaka Railway Police, disclosed that the freight train struck the Egaro Sindur Express from behind, leading to a forceful collision that mangled two carriages and resulted in this dreadful loss of life.
