Gen AI has immense potential but needs responsible handling: SAP Labs India head

Sindhu Gangadharan, Managing Director of SAP Labs India, believes that a delicate balance is required when dealing with generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI), emphasising the need for responsible use.

In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Gangadharan highlighted the challenge of finding the right equilibrium between regulating technology and fostering innovation. She stressed the importance of avoiding extremes where innovation is stifled by excessive control or driven solely by growth, stating, "India is playing the right balance."

Gen AI, a disruptive technology, holds immense potential for solving problems at scale, according to Gangadharan. She sees it as a complementary aspect to existing AI applications, offering outstanding use cases across various industries and roles.

Gangadharan pointed out that India is well-positioned in the global AI landscape. India boasts the top talent pool in AI, ranking first in talent and skills and fifth in research. With its abundant talent, a vast market, and significant scale, Gangadharan believes that if a technology works in India, it can succeed anywhere in the world.

Additionally, Michael Moe, the CEO of GSV Ventures, expressed optimism about the current investment landscape. Despite challenges, Moe sees India as an attractive destination for investors. He emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities during times of uncertainty, stating, "It is a good time to be an investor everywhere, but in India especially."

Moe acknowledged the challenges faced by edtech giant BYJU's but viewed the situation as ultimately healthy for the startup ecosystem.

He sees it as a learning experience for investors and entrepreneurs, making them more aware of potential pitfalls. While the BYJU's situation caused a shock to the system, Moe noted that investors remain bullish on the edtech space, highlighting the resilience and potential for growth in the sector.
