Govt’s emphasis on solar modules from India positive; expect to double capacity: Borosil

The government's emphasis on obtaining solar panels in and from India is positive for Borosil Renewables, said Pradeep Kheruka, Chairman of the company. Borosil Renewables is the only solar glass manufacturer in India.

“The nation is powering ahead with solar energy and the government has decided that in the spirit of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat', the modules that are going to generate the energy and the cells which are the active ingredients in the modules should be made in India. When the module is in India, the other very important component of the module is solar glass on which the whole module comes into existence. It so happens that we are the only manufacturers of solar glass in India and therefore we have a chance of being able to meet the requirement of the module maker in India by supplying solar glass from our company,” Kheruka said in an interview with CNBC-TV18.

Kheruka said that they are looking at doubling capacity and have kicked off another round of capex to increase the capacity.

“We had just completed our expansion which was doubling the previous capacity in 2019. Now we have already kicked off our third furnace and we hope to be in production by June 2022 which will further double our existing capacity. We are now 450 tonnes a day and that would make us 950 tonnes a day,” he said.

He also said that the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme is an indirect advantage for Borosil Renewables.
