WPL 2023: Check the orange and purple cap holders after Mumbai Indians vs Gujarat Giants match

Mumbai Indians defeated Gujarat Giants by 55 runs to qualify for the playoffs of the Women's Premier League in Mumbai. MI stays on top of the points table after securing a perfect 10.

Mumbai Indians scored 162 for eight and then restricted GG to 107 for nine in 20 overs. Sent into bat, MI lost Hayley Matthews in the first over but Yastika Bhatia smashed 44 off 37 balls, while Nat Sciver-Brunt chipped in with a 31-ball 36.

Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur stroked her way to 51 off 30 balls, before getting out in the third last ball of the innings. Gujarat batters could not pose a serious challenge to the MI bowlers.

Meg Lanning remains the orange cap holder as she is still the leading batter of WPL season one. With a strike rate of 138.99 and 55.25 average, she is on top of the ladder with 221 runs. Saika Ishaque is currently the top wicket-taker of the WPL but in the match against Gujarat, she didn't take any wickets. However, her last over was crucial for the MI team to stay unbeaten in the tournament.  The Purple cap holder also remains unchanged with Saika ruling the scoreboard with 12 wickets and an economy of 5.66.

Prior to this, Mumbai Indians had won over Royal Challengers Bangalore by 9 wickets. And it was Hayley Matthews's unbeaten 77 lead and 3-wicket haul which led Mumbai Indians in for a comfortable 9-wicket win. West Indies' Hayley Matthews was unsold in the first round of the WPL auction before MI picked her up in the accelerated round. Matthews is now also the purple cap holder with 124 runs in her kitty. Hayley replaces India's U-19 captain Shafali Verma in the race for the purple cap.

Mumbai Indian's Saika Ishaque also become the purple cap holder after their last game. She replaces Tara Norris who took a five-wicket haul in her previous match. After playing two games in the league, Ishaque holds six wickets with an economy of 5.16.

Delhi Capital's first win was thriving on the strong shoulder of the opening duo Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning. Their 162 runs-opening partnership really set the tone in Royal Challengers Bangalore game against Delhi Capitals. After the second WPL game, Shafali Verma dons the orange cap with 84 runs in her kitty.

Chasing a mammoth target of 223 set my DC, RCB started off pretty well with captain Smriti Mandhana's quick boundaries and a six in the second over. But the momentum didn't carry forward after quick wickets. It will be interesting to see how U-19 captain Verma pan-outs her WPL career after a brilliant start.

When it comes to the orange cap, USA's pacer Tara Norris sizzled the day with her first 5-wicket haul. Her 5/29, makes her the orange cap holder at the moment. Shafali (84), Meg (72) along with Tara's fifer helped them take the second spot on the points table. Tara took her four wickets in two overs as she turned things around for DC. She broke some amazing innings - starting with Perry (31 off 19), Disha Kasat, Richa Ghosh, and Kanika Ahuja.
